We started

Potty training . . . again.

Cheyanne has been itching literally to get out of her diapers. This morning, I decided we would try. I dug out a pair of Nathan's old underwear that don't fit him anymore and put them on Shy. I also moved the tiny potty to the living room where we were hanging out after breakfast. She was SO excited to finally FINALLY be like her brother she wouldn't get off it. She even tried to go standing up a few times.

She didn't have any accidents all morning, so we ventured to Target (diaperless!) to get her some big girl underwear. She picked out some Dora (of course) and Ariel undies. She also was more than willing to use the potty at the mall. Every time she did, she would jump up and clap for herself.

She did have one accident when we came home before nap time, but hey its only day 1.

Disney Fairy Dress

My sister Tina bought Cheyanne the cutest little dress up dress for her birthday. Its the Disney Princess Rosetta dress complete with little fairy wings.
Every time I ask Shy if she wants to wear it - with a straight face and very logically she says - "No mommy, I don't want to be a fly."

Swimming Lessons

Sal and I have decided since Nathan is 3, well 3 1/2 in 3 days it was about time for swimming lessons. We swim a lot in the summer time and would like him to feel a little more confident in the pool this year. We thought a group lesson for a 3 yr old would not be the best idea because the techniques may not stick since there would be too many distractions during the class. Plus he would barely get any one on one time. Since he is a SUPER beginner, he needs all the one on one time he can get.

With a generous donation from my dad, we were able to sign Nathan up for private swimming lessons. Once the 10 lessons are over they guarantee he will be drown proof, be able to dive to the bottom of the shallow end of the pool unassisted, tread water and back float.
We shall see.

Today was his first lesson. He was SO excited. There is no word for how excited he was. He went pee 3 times in the 10 minutes we were waiting for his teacher to finish a lesson with another kid. His teacher is a young college kid named Daniella. She seemed nice and patient enough.

Once he got in the pool he was so stiff. If you know how muscly Nathan is, you can understand that. He runs stiff, he falls stiff, he dances stiff etc etc. He can't help it. He was also swallowing a lot of water and doing a lot of thrashing. About 20min into the lesson he loosened up a little and realized nothing was really going to happen to him. He also realized it was OK to trust this stranger. There were times when Daniella said 'lets do this' and he would get frantic and say "I can't" "I reawwwy can't!". When he did that, Cheyanne and I became cheer leaders and gave him a little "gooooo Nathan!" and that seemed to boost his confidence.

By the end of the lesson he was going underwater without choking, opening his eyes underwater (with goggles on), and he even dove (with assistance) to the bottom of the 3ft to get a ring! All in all it was a great half hour and he loved every second. Of course he screamed bloody murder when it was time to leave, but that's a different story.

Luna Kitty

An update on the new member to the family.

On Tuesday we brought Luna to the vet. She now weighs 1lb 1oz. Come to find out she is 5 wks old. WAAAAY to young to be taken away from her mommy. The idiot women I got her from said 8 wks although Sal or myself didn't believe that. She looked a lot younger. That aside she is NOT being bottle fed and still thriving. She sleeps a lot during the day (which all babies do) and keeps me up at night (again, which all babies do).

Dusty has adjusted and LOVES her. They play all the time. She likes to jump up and grab his tail when he's not paying attention. He likes her to chase him all over the house, especially on the slippery linoleum in the kitchen.
Shy picks her up whenever she can and drags her all over the house. We have instilled the "NO picking up kitty" rule. But no one follows that.

Right before we told her 'don't pick kitty up'

Meet Luna

We got another kitten. Her name is Luna.

Call us crazy, the zoo, Dr. Doolittle whatever you want it doesn't bother us "the more the merrier"!!

We were planning on adopting a kitten from a friend that found 3 babies and was bottle feeding them. That fell through, but after that we were on a kitten kick. I found via Craigslist a women getting rid of a litter of kittens that her cat had, for free. She said this was the 4th litter for her 3yr old cat which she swears she will spay this time. Ya right. Ugh. People just don't get it.

Anyway, we took one kitten home. We named her Luna. She is supposedly 8 wks, but looks really young. I am guessing if she isn't 8 weeks yet, she's just about there. She sleeps a lot and LOVES her crate. We are finding out she is not litter box trained, but we are working on that.

Angel LOVES her as she does all babies. Whether it be dog, cat or otherwise.

Kiehloe ignores her, which is typical and just fine with her.

Dusty is . . . adjusting. He is used to being the top cat around here. I think once he realizes this little tiny thing isn't taking over, he will be fine.

Nathan of course loves her and has been pretending to be a kitten all day. He crawls around meows and licks my leg. If he had it his way he would hold her all day long, but she wants nothing to do with that.

Cheyanne is absolutely thrilled. She talks to "Muna Kit" all day and offers her bites of all her food, licks of her popsicle, and endless kisses. She also asks her every hour or so "You OK, Muna Kit, Huh? You OK?"

The collar is WAAAAAAY too big, but I put it on for the photo op.

Jack Fisher Park

During the summer months or freak heat waves, we love Jack Fisher Park because it has lots of shade, water features and great kids and mom's who hang out there.

We Visted Firehouse 4

About a year ago we were on our weekly play date with Kim, Niko and Kyra at a playground here in Campbell. Niko ended up slipping off the play structure and hitting his chin on the way down. It was very apparent the cut on his chin would need stitches and immediate attention. There was no way to get him to the hospital so Kim called the paramedics as I held his chin together. The fire truck came to gauze him up so he could get to the hospital in his mom's car rather than the ambulance. It just so happened I went to high school with one of the Firemen. Once Niko was bandaged up we were sitting around waiting for his dad to get there from work. Carlos (the guy I went to high school with) and I got to talking. He invited us to the station for a tour but nothing ever came of it.

Carlos and I found each other on Facebook and got back in touch about 2 months ago. He offered again to give us a tour of the firehouse and fire truck. Yesterday evening Sal, the kids and I met Kim, Alvaro, Niko and Kyra for dinner (which the kids barely ate because they couldn't contain their excitement about the fire station). After dinner we all went for the tour. Carlos was so sweet and thorough. He answered all our questions and let the kids be as hands on as they wanted.

I Ran My First 12K

Today was the Bay to Breakers.

This morning I woke up after very little sleep. It was a combination of the heat, anticipation and the kids keeping me up. Thank god I took a long nap yesterday. I woke up at 5:00am, made breakfast and coffee. I ate, got myself together and was out the door by 5:45 on my way to my mom's. I parked my car at her house and she dropped me downtown to the entrance to "Corral C".

I walked in at 7:00 and stood in a 15min. port-o-potty line. I was at the race entrance by 7:15. The race started at 8. While waiting I met a wonderful woman named Lola. She was so great to talk to. We had a lot in common and she was hilarious. I was laughing the whole time. We mostly talked about running but also about our kids. She happened to have a 4yr old boy who is bursting with personality and energy. So much like Nathan.

As we were talking we were also randomly being pelted with corn tortillas. Yes, corn tortillas. Lola told me that this was another Bay to Breakers tradition. People throw corn tortillas like frisbees in the air. I mean THOUSANDS of corn tortillas. By the time the race started you were no longer walking on asphalt. You were slipping on corn tortillas. On a side note, there was also beach balls being tossed around and some guy in front of me caught one and was going to serve it into the air. Well apparently he cannot play volleyball very well because he accidentally spiked it right into MY FACE! At close range! Surprisingly, the slapping corn tortillas hurt a lot more than the beach ball.

So the race finally started. At 8 they let the seeded runners out and each corral 4min after that. I started around 8:10. As I crossed the start line I felt a surge of adrenalin and was thinking "I can totally do this!" It was a little crowded at first but once we hit the Hayes Street Hill (mile 2) things spread out a little. I jogged half the hill and then had to walk. That hill is no joke! Plus it was starting to get hot. Thank god for the water station at the top.

Around mile 4 it started to get really hot and there was no shade to run in. I started to feel woozy. I had to walk /jog in order not to puke. It was a little embarrassing considering all the old naked men who seemed to have no trouble at all. Yes, there were naked men. Yes, they were all at least 50 yrs old. Yes, they were sweating from their head to their feet. Yes, it was repulsive. Oh, there was 1 naked woman I saw. Strange, I don't know how a woman can run naked painlessly.

By mile 6 things were downhill and starting to get shady again. Thank goodness, I was still fighting the nausea. By mile 7 I was feeling pretty good and was able to get back on track.
As I came down the hill to the finish line I saw Sal, the kids and my mom. I was sweaty and nasty but I did it!!

My final time was 1:26:36.

The winner Sammy Kitwara's (from Kenya) time was 33:31.

Here's my stats:

I encourage anyone who wants to do something new and exciting to do it!!

IT ROCKED!!

Everyone forgot their cameras but I am going to by the offical picture from the race when they come out on Thursday, so check back for an *ultra flattering*, sweaty, running pic of me :)

Mother's Day

This mother's day was the day after Cheyanne's birthday so I elected to do nothing. I wanted to relax and 'do nothing'. For the most part things were going according to plan except - Sal forgot it was mother's day (the 1 day a year I am allowed to sleep in) and slept the morning away while I got the kids up, fed, dressed teeth brushed, face washed etc...Not to knock him too much though, because when he did get up he apologized profusely and vacuumed the whole house.
In the morning we went to The Wooden Horse and spent a gift certificate. That store is amazing so we ended up staying for almost 2 hours. When we got home we ate lunch and it was finally nap time. The kids went down around 1:30 and I too took an undisturbed 2 hour nap! It was wonderful!
When we all got up, Cheyanne and I were playing 'babies' in the playroom. We were in there when suddenly my stomach started to gurgle....about 30 minutes later I was doubled over -coming out of both ends - stomach flu. It was the most violent and horrible stomach flu I have ever had!
The rest of my day was spent on the floor in the bathroom or on the floor right outside the bathroom. During this episode I managed to hear a message from my mom on the answering machine saying "Carmen, I hate you, I have the vomits too". What are the odds?
I managed to get to bed somehow and was feeling a little better around midnight.

THEN

Over the baby monitor around 1:00am I hear a horrifying noise followed by a frantic "MOMMY!!". I run in the kids room and poor Nathan is covered.
I go get Sal and we clean him up, change his sheets and put him back to bed with an over sized bowl and one of those kidney shaped thingies from the doctor.
Around 2:00am the same scenario happens again (no where near the bowl or kidney shaped thingy)....then 3:00 (again missing the bowl).....then 4:00 (guess what he missed)....
By this time Nathan is sleeping on an old dog blanket and had no pillow case. I am also doing loads of laundry in the middle of the night in the dark basically with my eyes closed.
Around 6 am Sal had left for work already and Nathan climbed in my bed. He took a sip of water and told me "he was a very sick little boy". About 15 min later he jumped up and ran to his room only to unleash that sip of water all over the floor.
The rest of the day was spent laying on the couch eating popsicles and watching cartoons. Shy was up most of the night with us so she was exhausted and welcomed this lazy day. Plus what kid is going to complain about endless popsicles. She managed to avoid this flu somehow.

My mom blacked out from the violent vomiting. She ended up in the hospital with severe dehydration. She is fine now.

That Monday night, Sal was up sick too.

Margie (my dad's girlfriend) also got sick Monday night - with the stomach flu.

Sal's cousin Lena called today she got sick on Monday with the flu.

The last time we were all together was at Cheyanne's birthday party the day before. It couldn't be food poisoning because no one ate the same things. Sal didn't even eat a morsel of food the whole day (he was 'just too busy'). Someone there had to of had a germ and spread it to all of us. They have some serious karma coming to them! I don't know who else got sick, but I'm investigating.

Shy Turns 2!

We had Cheyanne's second birthday at Oak Meadow park in Los Gatos. It is a beautiful park that has a merry go round and real steam train rides. The day was beautiful and almost everyone invited made it. Near the end our next door picnic neighbors even let us use their bouncy house for a while until the vendor came to pick it up. We couldn't have asked for a better day. Here's some pics of the party.

The boy down the street

Every few days or so there is a group of 4 to 5 young boys that ride their bikes up and down the street. One is about 12, and there are 3 brothers ages 3, 4 and 6. Nathan usually joins them. Since Shy can't ride a bike yet, she hangs out in front of our house with me waiting for the 4yr old (we don't know his name because he doesn't speak very good English and we can't understand him when he says it) to ride by. Shy calls him "My New Friend". When he does, she asks him to stop. He always does and Shy asks him to pick baby lions (dandy lions) in our front yard with her. They pick a few and then he hops on his bike and rides with the boys again.

Last time we were all out there, instead of Shy asking him to pick baby lions, she asked him to hold her hand. With a big smile he did and they took a short walk up the driveway and back down. I guess this was not enough for her because she then pulled up her shirt and asked "My New Friend" to 'touch her belly'. He did (quickly and nervously). This of course caused Shy to giggle hysterically. Then she asked him to touch her back, again he did, again flirty giggle.

Does she have her first crush on a little Mexican boy down the street? She seems to be drawn only to him. Should I be stopping her when she is lifting her shirt and asking this boy who we don't even know his name to touch her belly? It seems innocent enough.
I am not sure if I should do something, or not. For now I am just waiting to see what happens. Its actually kinda cute.

Just Because

Just because the last few posts have been about Nathan. Here are some randoms about Shy.
  • We got her a new baby doll (which she picked out at Toys R Us) for her early birthday present. She LOVES it. Every time it giggles her face lights up with joy and she lets out a little squeal.
  • She loves watching the dogs eat raw hides. (see below)
  • Every morning after brushing our teeth she asks me very politely to please put a pony or a piggie in her hair.
  • Her current favorite breakfast is Frosted Flakes with raisins.
  • Her favorite song is Jingle Bells.
  • She can count to 10 almost every time you ask her. Once in a while she'll say 1...2...7...7....7....10!
  • When you ask her how many of something she wants she will always tell you 7.
  • Her favorite color is pink
  • She is a blankie sniffer
  • She is known to come up to you and hug you and tell you she loves you at random.
  • When tucking her in at night she must have 4 choomis, her pink blankie and a glass of water. Also in this order, one kiss on the lips, one hug, one eskimo kiss, 2 butterfly kisses on each side. We oblige because one day she will want nothing to do with us when she goes to bed.

A New Name

Nathan has a little stuffed dog he got for Valentines day from Sal's mom that he sleeps with every night. When I asked him what his doggie's name was he told me his name is "Meat".

X Games

Today while getting the kids ready for bed, Nathan was demonstrating his launching skills. He stands on his dresser and with all his might launches himself on to his bed. He has made up names for all these jumps.

They are:
Karate Jump
Shiver Me Booty
Superman Front Jump
40 Bucks
Back
Pirate Jump

Why did I ever watch that?

Recently my brother Brendan posted a video on his Facebook page. I (realizing it might be kinda gross) watched it.....It has ruined my life.

I cannot stop thinking about it. NOT that I don't want to. NOT that I don't try!

I was at the Elephant Bar a few nights ago. Being at an Asian restaurant with a safari theme and two small kids on a busy Friday night, you'd think there would be enough distractions for me NOT to think about a tiny little 4 minute video from earlier that day. No. As soon as I was about 1/2 way through my dinner plate - that video popped in my head and I felt nauseous.

Yesterday afternoon while at Party City with my family while shopping for Shy's birthday party supplies, I thought about that video and again felt nauseous. I had to leave immediately and seek fresh air because I almost got sick in the store!

On the way home from Whole Foods yesterday evening with a delicious dinner waiting in the trunk of the car, I thought about the video......I had to 'shuuush' everyone in the car, roll my window all the way down and hang my head out until we arrived home.

Today at Costco while the kids were eating hot dogs loaded with ketchup that dripped out with every bite I had to turn away. I couldn't even handle that.

How can I forget I saw that video? Any suggestions are welcomed!
